Mazda MX-5 Miata ($23,190 – $28,660) –The little car that started off the rebirth of modern-day roadsters is affordable, econo mical and loads of fun, and now available with a retractable hardtop. The Mazda MX-5 Miata is a two-seat convertible powered by a 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine good for 167 horsepower. Depending on trim level, you’ll find this power routed to the rear wheels through a five- or six-speed manual transmission or an available six-speed automatic — though with the automatic, hp drops to 158.
Being a sports-focused roadster, the MX-5 offers a balanced range of features, though it skips some higher-end features. Power accessories are standard, as is a CD player and tilt steering. Upgrade to a Touring model and you get keyless entry, a trip computer, and cruise control, while Grand Touring models mix in heated leather seats, automatic climate control, and other conveniences.
Traction control is available on most models, but electronic stability control is not. Standard anti-lock brakes, front and seat-mounted side airbags, however, offer a measure of safety. Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS have crash-tested the 2012 MX-5. For more sport care reviews just click on that link. Thank you!
